The Kiki/Bouba Effect

Broad Question

How close are human thought patterns?

Specific Question

Does thought patterns change with a section of colliers and shapes?

Hypothesis

it is hypothesized people will say the blue and or the blob is bouba and kiki is the spiky or red shape

Variables

Independent Variable:

The independent variable is the cards used.

Dependent Variable:

The dependent variables are the place and the persons decisions

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Grade of people tested
Color of shapes
Name of shapes

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

General Plan

An experiment was conducted to determine how people make decisions. 10 sharp figures and 10 round and bubbly shapes were drawn on index cards 5 of each shape were colored red and five were colored blue. Fifty people were tested at random, nobody tested twice. Each person was asked to identify if the card was either Kiki or Boba. The experimenters recorded their responses on a chart. The experiment was carried out privately in the cafeteria at different lunch periods at Josiah Bartlett Elementary School . The experimenter took testers on a voluntary basis who were interested in performing the experiment.

Potential Problems And Solutions

Losing cards- Numbering them and keeping them together

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

None

Background Research

this experiment is meant to test the evasion of language and how people make decisions.
In both the English and the Tamil speakers, 95% to 98% selected the curvy shape as "bouba" and the jagged one as "kiki" the reason may be because the sounds of K are harder and more forceful than those of a B.

Data Analysis

Conclusion

Discussion

The experiment of Kiki and Boba was to see if patterns in human thought are similar. Twelve people were shown twenty cards with ten of the cards being red shapes and the other ten with blue shapes. The shapes on the cards were spiked or rounded. The twelve people were asked which card they thought should be named Kiki and which card should be named Boba to see which was the most common color and shape chosen for each character. The original hypothesis was that the majority of people would find the red sharp shape Kiki and the blue round shape Boba. The data collected supported the original hypothesis

because 60% of the people asked called the sharp edged shapes Kiki while 40% called the sharp edged shapes Boba. There was not a great difference between the twelve test subjects when shown the cards in different places this proves that their thoughts were similar.

During the experiment it was necessary to change the scoring sheets because it was too complex, instead the cards were numbered 1 to 20 this allowed for a simple way to collect our data. The experiment was actually very low tech although computers were used were used for scoring and totaling the data at the end. The charts made on the computer will make it easy for someone in the future to compare their finding with ours and to see if human predictability has remained the same.

Abstract

The experiment of Kiki and Boba was to see if patterns in human thought are similar. Twelve people were shown twenty cards ten cards being red shapes and ten with blue shapes. The shapes are spiked or rounded. Twelve people were asked which card they thought should be named Kiki and which card should be named Boba to see which was the most common color and shape chosen for each character. The original hypothesis was that the majority of people would find the red sharp shape Kiki and the blue round shape Boba. The data collected supported the original hypothesis.

60% of the people asked called the sharp edged shapes Kiki while 40% called the sharp edged shapes Boba. There was not a great difference between the twelve test subjects when shown the cards in different places this proves that their thoughts were similar. Speech and thought patterns led the test subject to asign the softer sounding name of Boba to the cloud like shapes and the harder sounding name of Kiki to the sharper looking shapes.
